Holiday Commercialization

Happy Valentines day!

With every holiday in the US being completely commercialized the one thing that I never seem to get, at least my wife says, is the importance of flowers.

I don't buy flowers, at least not as much as I should. I don't buy them because simply... "They Die" and they die fast. I know women love to ohhh and ahhh over flowers and gifts and it makes them feel special, but I don't think flowers and gifts are needed to show feelings or express appreciation.

I hate the commercialization of holidays, It happens to every holiday anymore. Christmas is a 2-3 month event and Thanksgiving has become a footnote. Needless to say "I did not go to Jared". I am sick of those commericals.

Tonight I plan on taking my wife out. Grandpa will watch the kid so her mom and I can have some time alone. I do not have a gift, I do not have flowers, I just have my feelings to convey. We are going to dinner, so there is still a contrabution to the "Commercialization factor", but time alone is enough to express a feeling. A feeling that I think is more valuable than any gift can compete with. Feelings last alot longer than flowers and mean alot more.

The idea behind flowers is more an expression of affection and was never (or should be) intended to replace the love and adoration one has for their significant other. Commercialism has taken away the significance of the gifts by advertising too hard but if the gift is given, no matter how fragile or fleeting, with the right heart it will carry the same message as sharing just your feelings. Sometimes we need to buy those 'senseless' items for our loved ones for nothing other than sharing a joyful moment with them. If you reflect on it, it really is more about the happy experiences that we create with our partner and that can mean just being with them or giving into the 'Comercialization factor'.

One thing we found, is that if you completely cover up the stem of the flowers in water, they last much longer. We had some roses that fully opened and looked great 2 weeks after I bought them for my wife. We actually ended up throwing them out before the flowers died because the water got so nasty.

I'm sorry Ross,
That just still sounds weird. But yes I agree and there are other additives you can add to water to help maintain longevity of the flowers.

Death is a very dull, dreary affair, and my advice to you is to have nothing whatsoever to do with it.

I agree with the comments above. Stay away from the giving on the holiday. Stop on the way home tonight or some other night and get her flowers. You always get the what did you do? or Whats up? Just tell them that you love them. It brightens the day so much. Have them delivered to their work. Everyone oohs and ahhs. Brightens the whole day.

Buy a plant. I have said for many years, I hate holidays. Christmas is nothing more than " What did you buy me? ". Giving a gift that is going to last more than a moment. If she wants roses buy here some to plant in the front yard. We forget that at one time they actually meant something. Perhaps its time that we start to remember.
