Saw this on Neowin today, my pants are tight.
Despite the fact there are currently no cards that support DX10, Crytek managed to pull off a demo at PDC 2005 using software layering to show what to expect when the DX update & cards are out. They used the Farcry environment to show:

Dynamic Day/Night Cycle
Fully interactive environments
Sunrays + Diffuse transmissions
Real-time soft shadows & Soft particles
Interactive/destructive environments
Volumetric clouds
and last but not least, Advanced shader technology!

Why's it gotta be crytek???? Could it be a game engine company that still cares about doing the job the right way? Any way I'm not going to be able to afford a new rig just to handle the pretties.:pissed:

God damit, I give up. It'll take me years to get up to speed on something like that. It's getting impossible to keep up.

Because Crytek came up with game engine way before anyone else and that game engine is by far still the best and prettiest even today. More pretties is what it is all about. Game Immersion.

Yeah, I agree with you Rehn. Farcry was a great game but it wasn't the best I've ever seen.

I'd liked to argue that. I prefer the graphics in Farcry over Half-Life 2 as a whole, but Half-Life 2's engine has better implementation of physics and character models. The whole jungle effect and draw distance in Farcry is still the best, IMO. And with that directx 10 demo is now proves to be even more. There's even a 64 bit version of Farcry that adds even more effects that the 32 bit version can't handle.

As for Half-Life 2 there is something sterile about it. Farcry just has a more organic feel to it that immerses me more into the game.
