View Full Version : EQ2 and WOW

Moved here.
heh, what's this "free time" thing you talk about. I'm about to go insane with school right now so I haven't done much of anything. Less than a week and my pain will be over. Until then I remain in a semi-corpsey state. After that hopefully I can get caught up on all the fun, but there is no much now backlogged that it may take me a while. Still need to purchase HL2 even, and I've been wanting to get absorbed into a DEEP game like eq2 or wow lately but I still haven't fully decided which will draw my attention. I've been looking through lots of the forums for both of them during the day while sitting at my desk pretending to work. I'm not fully convinced either way, but personally eq2 is drawing more desire so far. I'm sure dbone and dreadgore will reprimand me for even considering eq2, but from what I'm reading, it seems to be more my style. (let's see if that starts something, then later when I have some more time i'll discuss the reasons I'm leaning toward eq2)I have to say though that WoW kicks ass!!! I find it very amazing that they let everyone customize the UI as much as they do. Someone even wrote a whole tamiguchi type dragon thing that you can have displayed on your interface. Right now they are still going through some minor teething problems after the launch, but everything still works very well. I just regret that Horde and Alliance characters can't really work together. So Ghostie took the WoW plunge. Are we going to have to approach this as a group like we did with DAoC??

You know, from what I've read, WoW isn't a group oriented game so there's not much sense in us group approaching it dante. If we want to challenge ourselves with some grouping, EQ2 might be the better choice

PPFFFTTTT, EQ is gay. Nothing else to say.

Ya know, even if it wasn't that great of a game, my best memories with mmorpg's was with DAoC when we all played. I kinda miss that. Asheron's Call 2 just didn't do it for me, for some reason. WoW was fun in the beta and I could see myself get into it, but what really intrigues me is EQ2. There's something drawing me to that more than WoW.

I figured that's all dbone would have to say about eq, especially since he never played it, nor I think ever even watched someone play it. So you know, he's an extremely reliable resource on what EQ is like. I think his little outburst is caused purely by jealousy that we were able to experience the magic of EQ back in the glory days and he refused to even try it. I don't know about you guys but I STILL have awesome flashbacks to my first 20 or 25 lvls of EQ that makes me want to play ORIGINAL EQ again, but I know it wouldn't be the same, so I can resist. I want that to happen again and so far, with every mmorpg after EQ it hasn't even come close.

No, I've seen it. In fact, I saw you play it. Actually, let me clarify. I saw you load the game and then watch your character stand there and sell stuff just like an NPC would. Man, that was awesome. Then I think you ran across the room to show me how cool another character looked. Amazing gameplay! Yeah, I have awesome flashbacks about that too, I can totally see where you are coming from. I can only hope EQ2 has some great new graphics on that trade window to keep me really excited. *fingers crossed*

O M G, You're basing your opinion of EQ on the trade system?!? So you do realize there is more to the game than selling stuff, and you do realize that the only time you're using the selling interface, is when you're not playing right? Did you think I've been obsessed about this game for, what is is 3 or 4 years now so that I could sit in the bazaar and sell stuff I found? Wow, I'm stunned.
When you say "you've seen me play it" what you should be saying is:
"well, you showed me the graphix engine and what some of the armor looks like, but otherwise I have absolutely no clue what the game is about and how it plays, oh yeah, and I'm a pansy loser for never taking the time to find out"
There, that's what you should change your thoughts to

WoW can be pretty group oriented. Most of the quests I do right now are ones that I'm doing right along with Dreadgore and Mongo's characters. The major thing that WoW has going from is that they where able to look at all the previous MMO games and change some things they felt could be improved. I like most of the things they've come up with that are like other games.
I haven't seen a whole lot about EQ2 so I'll reserve my judgement. Right now my impression is that it is like EQ with a better graphics engine and a few gameplay tweaks. Not that that is a bad thing. But I always thought some of the things about the original EQ's gameplay would irritate me.

This is really your own fault. You knew I hadn't seen EQ before and you chose to show myself and Malice (that's right, he was there too) only those parts. If the master of EQ obsession has a limited time to show off one of his favorite games of all time and then shows me how cool it is to trade things, well then, what am I supposed to think? You should change your thoughts to the following:
OMG, I am so retarded. My 4 years of playing this game has ruined my mind. I really should have shown you something besides the trade system even though I spend all my time there. My obsession has turned me into a dirty stinking whore and I beg your forgivness.
 Spawnny, glad you are enjoying this because I am too, I miss these days of tormetting each other...

Holy crap that is really funny. I too haven't laughed this hard in a while. Keep it up boys cause I need the entertainment.
I do want to make some comments about EQ2/WoW. Let me first say, no I haven't really played either yet. However, Kyraath, you are the first person I have ever met and this includes the psyco gamers at school that I know that even considers EQ2 to be a partly reasonable game. Everyone I know says it sucks monkey balls and that EQ1 was far superior and they will play that for a long time because EQ2 sucks so bad. But like I said, I haven't seen it and all I know is what people say. If you think its that good then maybe it is, I dunno. However, I do know that I know of no one that hasn't enjoyed World of Warcraft. They sold freakin 250,000 copies on opening night! People lined up around the block to buy it at midnight. So that tells me that WoW is probably where its at these days. I'm going to play WoW over chirstmas break because honestly playing with friends is the most important part to me and since most everyone cool seems to be playing WoW then I'll just join them! :)

Malice, what are the reasons these guys are saying EQ2 sucks so bad for? Opinions are swinging both ways extremly. It seems more like either you love it or hate it. And EQ1 has totally changed into a high-level, time-consuming monster. I know alot of people are saying that EQ2 is nothing more than a major graphic update. What I've been reading there's more to it than that. People acuse EQ2 combat being too 'spammy'. If I remember correctly, in EQ1 and DAoC the bard class was very spammy, too, switching back and forth between songs.
The comment of 'IT SUCKS' just isn't a good enough review for me to discourage me from buying something. I need much better comparisons.
But I also agree with you, Malice, which game are all my buddy's playing in. But then again... I still EQ2's sirens call.

ok, here's the thing I typed up throughout the day. Before that though, I have to respond to Tyvan real quick.
Holy crap are you kidding, the only reason you hate EQ2 is cause you only get 4! character slots?!? Weren't you the one making fun of me for creating an alt back in the EQ1 days?!? Yeah, like you'll ever actually use more than 1 or 2 characters  So where are all these hate reviews that you keep talking about? I haven't found anything like this at all, in fact I've been reading tons of reviews of people who love eq2.
heh, i agree, I haven't laughed this hard in a LONG time. It's been great fun to pick on dbone again. Here's the thoughts I have for the games so far. I have more to say about both of these but holy crap am I busy lately. I'll continue my pre-play impressions soon.
As for the two games, I don't know yet for sure either. I haven't played either one of themyet, instead I've only read reviews and forum postings and checked screenshots and maps. I can't say for sure that EQ2 is going to be good and I've read both opinions about the game. The main complaint I'm seeing about EQ2 is that it takes a ton of time to really play it because it is more of a group oriented game. Pretty much after lvl 15 or 20 you have to group, just like EQ1. The other thing people are whining about is there isn't enough solo content. To me that's just silly because it's not a solo game. They made it to be a group game. On the other side there is WoW. The reviews I read about this game is there is SO much solo content that it is completely unnecessary to group. You can play through the entire lvls with any class solo. So it seems they did the opposite of eq and made a solo game and threw grouping in on top of it where eq made a grouping game and threw soloing in on top. Another thing I've read that I don't really care for in WoW is how fast the game moves. This is similar to AC2 and one of the bigest things I hated about AC2. The only thing I remember about AC2 is running after Tyvan trying to keep up but as soon as I got to the battle, the creature was deeeed and I was running after him again trying to keep up. Health and power regenerated so fast that it was useless for me to be a healer. From what I've read about WoW it's not nearly as bad, but close. This I don't like. The other thing that I am resistant about with WoW is that I've never really been exicted about the environment. When Tyvan first showed me that is was in developement he was SUPER excited about it and I couldn't really see anything that really stood out for me. I'm not real sure what it is about the game that doesn't, it just doesn't, there's nothing that really stands out as IMPRESSIVE to me. We'll see though, because of you slackers, I'll probably be forced to play it just so we can group again.

Oh yeah and another thing I was looking forward to was a game without that stupid crappy PVP. EQ2 has no pvp and they aren't planning on it unless they do the same thing as eq1 and have 1 server set up for pvp only. I think pvp limits the world that you get to experience and allows people to be the jackass whore bags they really are. One of the things I've read in the forums from people who have played WoW and left is that the community is some of the biggest assholes they've ever interacted with. Those of you who have played, have you seen anything like this?

Ok we better break all this down here
1 - I NEVER said the only reason I hate EQ2 was because you get 4 character slots. I was simply stating that you ONLY get 4 with EQ2 and you get 50 with WOW. And I do have more than 2 characters. I have 10 at the momment. Some Horde and some Alliance. My son alone has about 20. He likes to just make them and play the one he wants to at that time.
2- You can ask Dante, Mongo, Jeff, Kaster ( our new WoW guild buddy), Kim ( my wife. I had to show her what product that SOE makes you pay to beta) about ALL the bad reviews that came out when the NDA was lifted. Even Dante was ragging on it. Not sure why he wants to play it now.
3- You say "You can play through the entire lvls with any class solo. So it seems they did the opposite of eq and made a solo game and threw grouping in on top of it where eq made a grouping game and threw soloing in on top."
You should ask me what my review on the game was. I played it. Had a level 60 Human Mage and a 56 Night Elf Rogue as my highest characters.
Here are the flaws in your statements.
A- If you want, you can solo the entire game. That is if you want to grind just like you do in Everquest or EQ2 from what i hear. It MIGHT be possible to solo the entire game, but if you did it would take you ALOT longer than it would grouped.
B- Again, you can ask me if you want an opinion on the game i played to a level 60. The grouping in WOW is FAR from "thrown on top".
Everquest grouping never was as fun as this. You actually play a role in the group in WoW. Also, if you want that "UBER" loot, you HAVE to group.
C- You bring up AC2. I don't even remember you playing it maybe but 2 or 3 times. I was probably trying to level you up so you could group with us at our level. Just like I tried with Dante.
Here is what I personally can tell you about World of Warcraft.
-I have NEVER been involved in a game like this before.
-My wife has NEVER played a MMORPG before, but now she does every day.
- The dungeons in WOW are AMAZING. From the very first ones to the very hardest ones. Words really do not describe how well they are and how detalied they are.
- I have been playing WoW since March 18th 2004 and have yet to stop. It is that good. I have yet not wanted to log in and play.
-You NEVER log out of WOW with nothing to do for the next day. There is always something that you are looking forward to doing. Even with my level 60, there was always something to do.
-The Quests in this game are very deep. And the stuff that happens during quests are great. I can't wait for the Epic quests to be added.
There are also Class quests that you need to do for certian skills and spells. These are very involved quest that take a good bit of time to do. At level 20 the Paladin can do a quest for this http://www.thottbot.com/?i=4190. And the last part of that quest we have to travel a long way into the Horde area.
-It is hard to find a class to play. Every class that I have tried has been extremely fun. And every class can be different. For example my mage was a frost mage. He was strongest with his frost spells. The classes have a Talent tree that you go up in. So you can make the class around what spells you like the best or feel would be best for grouping. Another example is Mongo has a Paladin. He is going up alot in his Defense Talents so he can be the tank in our group.
-The loot in WOW is the best!! Blizzard knows that is what we want, so there is TONS of loot. This makes the game that much funner.
I guess it all boils down to, "Are you having fun?". And I am having a BLAST playing WoW. No other game has held my attention for this long. And I do not see an end in the near future either.
P.S.You just made me waste precious playing time Kyraath!!!!
P.S.S. I encourge Kyraath and Dante to buy Everquest 2. Play it for a month, then try WoW. You will not go back to EQ2...ask Jeff.
P.S.S.S. Kyraath I have a 10 day pass for you when you are ready. :D
P.S.S.S.S. Wow has no end game. You pay 15 bucks a month to chat and have a fashion show.

Woot!! Peer pressure strikes again!!!
However, I do agree with you a little bit about grouping with Dreadgore. He's so hardcore and wants to power level us so bad it feels like we are just getting drug all over creation with no time to figure anything out on our own. But I know he does it purely out of love. 8) Thanks Dread!! :D

hehe, we're just giving you crap dg, i know you just want to get us to where you are too, and i have fun all the time either way. That is a really excellent review you've given above. It's very interesting to see it from your point of view and I'm glad that I finally get to hear it from you. I've been wanting to hear what your thoughts on the game were but I've been so busy lately that I haven't had a chance to visit with you on AIM. That's one reason I jacked that other thread with this one, and it's really turned out to be a hot issue. I'm quickly coming up on the day when finals are going to be over and trying to decide which game to play. Though I'm more interested in the world and basis of EQ, that won't guarantee eq2 to be as good, and beyond the actual gameplay, I'm more interested in grouping with everyone again.
I do have another question for you dg. How is the cleric class in WoW? Cause you know I really enjoy playing the healer, is it like AC where cleric seemed to be pointless? or is there some use in having a healer in the group?
Thanks for all the info and the damn fine corruption you are laying on me. Oh yeah, you mention dungeons are great, what kind of dungeons are they? Something that has the same layout or floorplan every time you go back to it or is it randomly generated?
