Anyone have a good DVD decoder, that is free, I can install on a lap top that uses Windows Media Player 11. This laptop I have has a DVD player but no decoder software. When I start it up it will autostart Windows Media player then it will say that I need decoder software.
Thanks Guys...

There is no free DVD stand alone decoder but there is this: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It isn't as 'pretty' as Windows Media Player but plays DVD's just fine and it's open source. :)

Or you could just install the K-Lite Media Codec Pack. It comes in a few versions with different number of codecs, but they include the codecs needed to decode DVDs as well as Media Player Classic, which is a much better general media player than the newer Media Players. I haven't needed to install a standalone DVD player since I started using it several years ago.

I could not get the one you suggested to work Dante. It would not read the DVD for some reason so I tried Ghosts suggestion and it works perfectly. Thank you both, the K-Lite Media Codec Pack is a nice media pack.

I've shy'd away from K-Lite because it installs so many codecs that I've had problems with it in the past. That's why it wasn't my first recommendation. I'm glad it works for you, though!

A heads up on Video Lan. It stopped producing audio for main character in some dvds and for others it would not produce any audio at all. I dunno what was wrong with it. I installed Media Player Classic and it works just fine with all the dvds I've tried. I used VLC for quite a few months before this problem happened. I'm happy with Media Player Classic because it does what I need and it's quite a bit thinner then VLC is.
Just thought I'd throw the heads up out.
