I had an ext drive hook up to my DVR. Now I am not using it anymore and would like to use it at my PC. The DVR formated the drive(type unknown to me) Now the drive does not show up in explorer but can be seen in the device manager with no drive letter. I would like to format the drive to be usable in vista. Does anyone know a program that will see the drive and format it? I downloaded an app called testdisk it can see the drive but does not seem to do formating.

Okay this is going to be easy! Since you have testdisk installed use it. Once started create a new log file. Select the drive you want to format. Select the partition type - Intel/PC then analyse. Search for a partition created under vista. From there select the partition and change the type by selecting "T". Change to HPFS - NTFS and write to drive. Reboot and your PC will see the drive. You can then format the drive.

Good work dude. You could have also used Disk Management that's built right into windows but whatever.

Right-click My Computer.
Choose Manage.
Select Disk Management.

That would have been much easier. Thanks! Next time I will hopefully remember manage. especially since Dante showed me how to assign a drive letter there way back when. Thanks D
