Well Malice is back at the linux server thing again...yeah I know, sheesh. But I have been trying to get postgresql working on my Suse 9.1 install that I just did a few days ago. I actually think I got the service up and running now but I can't connect to it. The docs are long and confusing cause its linux and thats just the way everything is. But if anyone has done it and knows all the steps by heart, please speak up!
Also any apache2 guys out there? The last time I installed I think Mandrake it went smooth and apache was working right out of the box. I can't get it to work at all on this distro and my friend has the same and he can't get it to work either. Is there a lot of configuration that is usually necessary right out of the box to just get it to work at all?

I haven't used postgresql before, but I have used MySQL both on Linux and on Windows. What exactly are you trying to do with the postgresql server?
I also have done a little with apache, but not on SuSe. In all the redhat/fedora builds I've done, they already have apache setup and ready to serve a default I'm not configured yet page. Can you get anything to come up at all? The config file for apache is usually pretty large, but the real interesting bits are rather small and straight forward.

Well I'm taking a database programming class and the first assignment is to get MySQL and postgresql up and working so we can feel the pains of db admin he says. I have MySQL working on my windows box and IIS can see it and connect to it. However, postgresql is not really designded for windows. You are supposed to be able to do it using cygwin which I'm going to try when i get home tonight. However, at this point all I'm trying to do is get the daemon started and then connect using psql to the database and just create a table, thats good enough. But for some reason I get a crazy error when I try to connect that basically boils down to it can't find the server. I'm at work so I can't recall the exact error message. I've edited the pg_hda.conf which is where you set all that stuff up to allow local connections and whether to trust them or not. I'm kind of getting sick of doing this just for one assignment since after that I can use the schools MySQL and postgresql databases if I want. However, it would be nice to have the web server up and running with php and be able to connect to MySQL or postgresql. As far as apache goes, it says its up and running. If I do a chkconfig --list apache2 it shows it as on on runlevels 3 and 5 but if I do an /etc/initd/apache2 restart it fails with almost no information. I assume its just a configuration file problem as well but I thought at least they would set it up so you could get that default this page under construction, maybe Suse is gay? So i just need to spend a million hours pouring over apache2 docs to find out what the hell all those millions of options do. Thanks for your post though Ghosty. Dbone and I were just wondering about you, we haven't heard much. Has CP been working you like a dog or something?

Hmmm... I'm not sure what might be up with postgresql since I've never tried to run it. For both apps you might want to look through the log files in /var/log. You can probably grep the files for postgresql or apache and see if any errors popup. That will probably tell you exactly what is happening.
I have been pretty busy. I started out the month of June with apointments being scheduled on July 9th because the rest of the month was already booked. CP has also replaced a couple servers in the last month and we are in the process of getting a new service package. Between all that stuff, I'm not really sure which end is up anymore. :)

Damn, that does sound like your busy. Well I'm going to give up on postgres on Linux for now since I got it working with cygwin on my windows box. I will have to work on the apache problem later when I can find some time but that definately sounds like a good idea to search the logs. Thanks for you help.

I ditched postgresql, it's lame anyway. However, I found out that there was a bug in SuSe 9.1 if you tried to start apache2 with php_4mod installed. I ran the online updater and it fixed the problem. Bam, I have a web server now and PHP is working too, woot! And I got MySQL working and phpMyAdmin, boy I feel good tonight! Now I just need to tighten up the security a bit on the MySQL and phpMyAdmin and then I'm ready to rock. I guess now that all the admin stuff is pretty much out of the way I guess I have no choice but to sit down and code!
