I have a p3 500mhz computer that a friends son tried to do some software installation on. Needless to say It does not work anymore. I was asked if I could just simply wipe the system and restart windows on.

After inserting the windows setup and running fdisk, I have encountered a display screen that tells me I have a
Bootsector Write!!
Virus: Continue (Y/N)

Anyway to clean this or salvage ??

Old machines watched whenever anyone wrote to the boot sector because a lot of old school viri did just that. However, some applications such as windows do in fact write to the boot sector and that is ok. If you have boot sector checking enabled in the bios, every time it tries to write to it, it will pop up that box. I suggest just continuing every time. I don't remember it writing too often, I think just once actually during install. You should be good to go! No worries!

That or disable the anoyance from the bios. Assuming that there isn't a password for it.
