It appears that Sony doesn't quite know what to do with the upscaler on its PlayStation 3 console. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) released the following statement earlier this week concerning the PS3's upscaler:
A small number of older High Definition television sets found in the United States only have 1080i inputs for HD signals. Those televisions will currently only play some PS3 titles at 480p resolution. PS3 games render images at either 720p or 1080p for High Definition and you need 720p input on the TV to play select games that do not support 1080p. This is an issue on the side of the individual television sets, which do not accept 720p input, so when a game outputs an HD signal only at 720p, these select TVs have to display the game at 480p instead.
It now appears that the company may have spoken too early and they cannot confirm whether the issue will be resolved with a firmware update further down the road. According to Dave Karraker, SCEA's Sr. Director for Corporate Communications, the company is now "looking into the issue and haven't stated any actions that will be taken regarding it."
Also worthy of mention is that the PS3 also seems to have issues downscaling Blu-ray content as well. According to Arstechnica, the PS3 also has problems downscaling to 720p if your television cannot display at 1080i or 1080p.
"Alas, if you don't have a set that does 1080i or 1080p, you're going to be forced into 480p which is far less impressive," claims Arstechnica writer Ben Kuchera. "PS3's lack of a scaler bites it again. 720p output is not available on the titles we tested."
Although it?s unlikely that many would be affected by this particular situation, Blu-ray titles would look best with a 1080i or 1080p television in the first place.
That being said, we?ll keep you updated if Sony decides to change its position again on the PS3?s upscaler.
