This is a very interesting MMORPG. Right now it is in early alpha, and it doesn't look all that fun to play, but the idea is pretty interesting. Check it out here: Wurm Online (http://www.wurmonline.com)
One thing to note is that the game is written entirely in Java but still gets full 3D acceleration with special OpenGL bindings. It seems quite a few people are experimenting with using Java to write games now that computers are fast enough to run it well. This could very well be the direction a lot of games go in the future.
The other cool thing about this game is their entire concept. Basically they turn you loose on a continent full of trees and let you have at it. You have to chop down the trees, saw them into planks, mine some ore, light fires, smelt the ore into nails, pack the ground and then nail up the planks in order to build your own house. In the little alpha world they are testing with they have already built a bunch of towns and put down paved roads between them. They've even built a bridge across one of the bays a handfull of dirt at a time. Someone has also built a huge man made volcano. Very cool, if not a complete waste of time.
