Web search leader Google Inc. plans to build an office and research center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, that will hire up to 1,000 employees over the next five years, Michigan's governor said on Tuesday.

An announcement by Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm was set for Tuesday at the state Capitol in Lansing, Granholm's office said.

"We want to make sure that the world knows that this tremendous high tech company, one of the most successful in the world and the fastest growing, has chosen Michigan for its expansion," Granholm told Detroit's WWJ radio on Tuesday morning.

Granholm said Michigan had offered tax credits to lure the Google investment, but did not provide further details.

Google had posted job openings for the Ann Arbor location on Tuesday, including positions in its library digitization project, which has been hindered by court challenges over copyrights.
