DARPA -- that loveable bunch of US defense researchers that brought you stealth sharks, oblique wing aircraft, and mind reading research -- has just announced the next generation DARPA Grand Challenge. The previous DARPA Grand Challenge was a 131-mile race in the Nevada desert where dozens of completely automated vehicles raced around obstacles and over rugged terrain to win a $2M USD cash prize.

DARPA is at it again, claiming it will hold the next race on November 7, 2007. The race (http://www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/docs/urb_challenge_announce.pdf) (PDF) will be a 60 mile mock urban setting and "vehicles must autonomously obey traffic laws while merging into moving traffic, navigating traffic circles, negotiating busy intersections and avoiding obstacles."

During the first DARPA Grand Challenge no vehicle passed the 8-mile marker, yet only a year later several vehicles finished the entire 131 race without a scratch.
